Fuglsang Herregaard - a retreat for contemplation, research and artistic development
A place where science, art and nature meet in a historic setting.
With great care and vision, the Classenske Fideicommis has recreated Fuglsang Herregaard as a refuge for researchers, teachers and artists - just as it was more than 100 years ago, when the manor house under the de Neergaard family provided a unique cultural environment. During this period, Fuglsang attracted some of the most prominent figures in the visual arts and music of the time and achieved the status of a national cultural centre.
Today, the manor house once again stands as a vibrant meeting place for contemplation and exchange of ideas. The extensive modernisation, completed in 2019, has ensured modern facilities - including en suite facilities in all rooms, meeting and lounge areas, disabled access and fast Wi-Fi - all without compromising the special atmosphere of the place.
Collaboration with universities and cultural institutions
The recreation of Fuglsang as a refuge began with a strategic collaboration with University of Copenhagen and has since expanded to include University of Southern Denmark, CBS, RUC, Academy of Fine Arts, Conservatory of Music - and more have been added. The agreement includes access to Fuglsang Herregaard on particularly favourable terms, with the possibility of:
- Retreats for PhD writing and research work
- Scientific conferences, seminars and workshops
- Courses and internships for teachers and students
- Interdisciplinary collaborations between research and artistic disciplines
- Stays for creative development programmes and inspiration
The agreement is open for all higher education and related institutions to join.
A living heritage in a contemporary setting
Fuglsang Herregaard is owned by The Classenian Fideicommis, one of Denmark's major historical foundations. The foundation's ambition is both to continue the legacy of Fuglsang's heyday as a cultural centre and to promote:
- Danish research and knowledge development
- Ambitious development on Lolland-Falster
- Synergies with Fuglsang Art Museum, Ensemble Storstrøm and nature education in the area
- A unique combination of culture, art and academic work in beautiful, protected surroundings
Since 2016, KUMUS - built in the former tenant house - has functioned as an active cultural centre with a music hall, rehearsal rooms and art laboratory associated with Fuglsang Art Museum and Ensemble Storstrøm. The Classenske Fideicommis provides the buildings and courtyard free of charge and runs the centre.

Fuglsang Herregaard is scenically located by Guldborgsund and Skejten in southern Lolland - just 1.5 hours drive from Copenhagen. Good train and bus connections make it easily accessible, and for group stays, Fuglsang covers 50 % of the transport costs.
